Entry/Exit

Visitors are required to check in with security before proceeding to the office.

Parents who pick up their students before dismissal time must report directly to the Main Office, not their child's classroom.

Grades K-1 (cafeteria)

Pick-up for K-1 students will be in the cafeteria. Students must be signed out. 

POLICIES

Detroit Public Schools Community District seek to ensure a safe and orderly environment for every student. To make our schools the Centers of Excellence that we all expect them to be, we must ensure that students follow the Code of Conduct and display positive behavior in and out of the classroom.

It is important that all parents review the Student Code of Conduct booklet and discuss its contents with their children. Doing so also will help us achieve our goals to improve student achievement, create clean and safe school environments, enhance parental and community involvement.

What we expect of Students
Personal behavior
Students have the responsibility to reasonably avoid any behavior that is detrimental to achieving their own or other students’ educational goals. Students must cooperate in taking reasonable care of books, other instructional materials, technology, and encourage a climate where learning is cherished. Most particularly, students must refrain from engaging in behavior that violates the provisions of the Student Code of Conduct.

Respect for staff

Students have the responsibility of showing respect for the knowledge and the authority of school staff. Students must obey reasonable directions; use only acceptable and courteous language; avoid actions that show contempt and appeal decisions through the channels as described in this code. Assaults on school staff will not be tolerated.

Respect for fellow students

Students have the responsibility of showing respect for the rights and human dignity of fellow students. For example, students must refrain from name-calling, fighting, harassment, belittling or engaging in deliberate attempts to embarrass or harm another student.

Code of Conduct The Code of Conduct provides rules and regulations to govern student behavior during school, en route to and from school and at school related events. Attendance – On Time, Every Day, All Day

All students are expected to be in school every day and on time for each class. All students are expected be in a designated area within the school building or in their scheduled classroom before the tardy bell rings. All students have the right to be provided with equitable instructional time. Schools have the right to prevent students with excessive tardiness from interrupting the educational process of other students.

Appropriate Student Dress in Grades K-12

All students, including students exempt from the student dress code, are expected to exemplify proper grooming standards in a manner that projects an appropriate image for the student, school, and district.

At the school’s discretion, shirts shall be worn inside slacks with belts and by all students unless the shirt is designed to be worn outside the slacks or the pants are designed to be worn without a belt.

The District shall not require specific brands of clothing. All clothing items must be of an approved color from the common color selections presented in this dress code policy.

School Colors and Option

 Henderson Academy has implemented a student dress code. Please be advised of the consequences of being outside the dress code:

• Any student out of uniform/dress code will be sent to the office to contact a parent/guardian to bring in appropriate clothing. The student will not be allowed to return to class until he/she is in dress code.
• All violations of the dress code are Class I violations and will be logged and tracked by staff.
• Upon the second uniform violation, the student will receive a write-up for not following school rules. Please see the Student Code of Conduct for the consequences of receiving write-ups.
• Should a student continue to violate the dress code policy, more severe consequences will be imposed, as per the Student Code of Conduct.

Our Henderson Scholars dress in ready-to-learn wear. Here are the categories by grade:

Tops

Grades PreK-2: Dark Blue shirts

Grades 3rd -5th: Light Blue shirts

Grades 6th -8th: Black shirts

* Shirts and blouses must have buttoned down or straight collars. Turtlenecks and polo styles are permitted. 

* Color: All students shall wear approved colors required by the school

* Style: Long and short sleeves with a collar required. Turtlenecks and polo styles are permitted.

* Logos: Manufacturer trademarks, if any, must be one inch or less. DPSCD school logos are permitted and are not limited in size.

Slacks and Pants

* Color: All slacks and pants must be a solid color: Khaki or Navy Blue. 

* Style: NO LEGGINGS or JEGGINGS of any kind are allowed!!!!! Slacks and pants can be pleated or flat front, full length and appropriately fastened at the waist.

Belts: If the garment has belt loops, a belt should be worn at all time.

Skirts and Shorts

* Color: Khaki or Navy Blue, in a solid, single color.

• Style: Skirts and Shorts must be at least knee length. Please use the fingertip test with skirts before sending your child to school.

 

• NO yoga, stretch pants, leggings, or jeggings, or pajama pants.
• NO crop tops or shirts showing any stomach
• NO Croc and bubbles shoes or slides – They are deemed to be a hazard in the building
• NO ripped jeans/shirts or jeans/shirts with holes showing any skin
• NO undershirts to be worn as shirts
• NO shirts or hoodies depicting illicit language, drug paraphernalia (i.e. – Cookies), or violence
• NO skirts or shorts shorter than 2 inches above the knee
• NO sagging pants or pants showing underwear
• NO hoodies or hoods, headbands, bonnets or bandannas

After School Tutoring / Extended Day Program Enrollment 

The Henderson Academy After School Enrichment program has 3 sessions. The first begins in September, the second in January, and the third in March. Your child will be selected by their teacher to attend 1 session for the year.   Participation is for grades 2nd - 8th ONLY.  Students will receive additional assistance in math and reading, based on 2019 I-Ready scores and teacher recommendations.  

The program days convened are Monday's, Tuesday's, and Thursday's, 4:15pm - 6:00pm - SPACES ARE LIMITED.

PLEASE SEE YOUR CHILD'S HOMEROOM TEACHER FOR RECOMMENDATION CONSIDERATION INTO THE PROGRAM.

City of Detroit After School Recreation Program

Open to ALL DETROIT KIDS grades K-8

Detroit children will have more locations for recreational activities as 12 schools become After-School Fun Centers through a partnership with the City and Detroit Public Schools Community District.

The centers will operate from Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. and provide Detroit youth, grades K-8, can attend 12 after-school recreation centers in Detroit schools and take part in activities, such as chess, board games, arts-n-crafts, and various athletic and educational activities.
